1924 U.S.S. Mississippi Explosion
48 sailors killed in the explosion of the #2 turret aboard U.S.S. Mississippi near San Clemente Island CA on 12 June 1924. A “flare back” was cited as the cause of the fire/explosion. The ship was engaged in target practice firing at the time.
