“A Marine recruit from The Bronx died during an intense 54-hour training exercise just two weeks short of his graduation, officials said yesterday.
Bret Moran, 18, was found dead Thursday at around 2:30 a.m. in Parris Island, S.C., during an endurance exam called the Crucible, a field exercise that tests a recruits mental and physical limits.
The exercise was slated to end Thursday with a nine-mile hike back to the barracks when drill instructors found Moran and tried to wake him, said Maj. Ken White, a spokesman for the depot.
Moran was taken to a local hospital, where he died at 3:38 a.m.
Moran, a rifle marksman, enlisted with the Marines in July and began training at Parris Island two months ago. He was scheduled to graduate Dec. 3.” – Article 2
“Moran was treated for pneumonia a month before his death. The autopsy found that he suffered a microscopic infection that weakened his heart muscle. The medical examiner concluded that Moran’s illness could not be easily diagnosed.An investigation found that there was a lack of coordination between the training unit and the branch medical clinic, but did not find evidence of intentional wrongdoing or negligence.” – Article 3
