DANYELLE LUCKEY
May 18, 1993 – October 10, 2016
Danyelle Luckey, from Pittsburg, California enlisted into the United States Navy in May 2016. Danyelle completed US Navy Boot Camp and her “A”- School. Danyelle had been assigned as a personnel specialist onboard the aircraft carrier, USS Ronald Reagan. She was so excited about her first duty assignment that she wanted to cut her “leave” short and report early to the ship. In late September of 2016, Danyelle flew to Japan where she met and boarded the USS Ronald Reagan.
As the USS Ronald Reagan got under way Danyelle became ill. On October 4, 2016, she reported to sick call to receive medical aid only to be turned away and sent back to her bunk because it was only “sea sickness” according to US Navy medical personnel. Danyelle would go back and forth to medical from that day until October 9, 2016. During this short time period she became so sick that she lost the use of her legs and couldn’t walk. Other sailors had to literally carry her back and forth to her bunk. It got to the point that her Commanding Officer had to get involved just for the Navy medics to continue seeing her. Danyelle was never given a proper medical assessment and was given the all to common and standard “cure all” of Tylenol and Motrin for her pain. Danyelle’s medical condition continued to worsen to the point where she could no longer pull herself into her bunk and had to lay on the floor.
On October 9, 2016, Danyelle’s skin became discolored and her organs began to shut down. It was at this point of Danyelle’s medical emergency that the Navy medical team was ready to render aid, however by this time it was just too late. On October 10, 2016, this beautiful young woman died from her illness. Had the US Navy medical personnel completed a proper medical assessment, provided a suitable standard of healthcare and just given her the medical attention she needed, instead of sending her back to her bunk, her death most likely would have been prevented.
Danyelle was never given any antibiotics to treat her illness, nor was she ever given a proper medical assessment, Why did it take 6 days for the Navy to realize there was a bigger problem? Why did Danyelle’s Commanding Officer have to get involved to force the medics to see her?
This tragic death could have been avoided if proper treatment would have been rendered. One death is too many! Change needs to be made! not only in the Navy Healthcare System but across the entire military. Sailors, Soldiers, Marines and Airmen deserve better healthcare! They sacrifice their lives for this country and receive the poorest health care. The lack of accountability and justice has been non-existent in Danyelle’s death. No one has been held accountable! That’s ludicrous!
